Treatment Specialties

Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are now the most common mental illness affecting nearly 40 million adults a year. Anxiety often feels like someone just flipped the “on” button inside of your head or body and you just can't seem to turn it off. Constant worrying, overthinking, insomnia, feeling irritable or like you just can't concentrate are all common signs. Anxiety doesn't always show up in your mind either. A racing heart, muscle tightness, fidgeting, and difficulty catching your breath are all physical symptoms of anxiety. I work to give my clients the tools needed to regulate the mind and the body in order to finally feel a sense of calm.

Depression

Depression can be tricky. It doesn't always show up in that “black hole” kind of way where you feel like you are drowning in sadness, meaninglessness, and fighting off thoughts about whether or not life is even worth it. Sometimes, it comes in more subtle or hidden ways, like feeling numb, fatigued, and like nothing really sounds good anymore. It can creep up before we are even aware that it's there. If you have been struggling to feel like yourself, therapy can help you find a way out of the haze depression can bring.

Relationships

We are social creatures. Healthy connections to others are crucial to our well-being. What do you do when you are caught in patterns of destructive or toxic relationships? What happens when you have painful fights and abuses of trust and the only thing you feel like doing is pulling away from everyone? Therapy can help you learn healthy communication skills, break your toxic patterns, and set necessary boundaries.

Life Transitions

Any major change, whether good or bad, can leave you feeling uprooted and thrown off course. Break-ups, divorces, the birth of a child, moving, beginning a new job, losing a job, or even getting married can lead to difficulty adjusting to your new normal. Whatever the transition, having the right tools to cope can help you adjust in the healthiest way possible.

Trauma & PTSD

I believe that untreated trauma is one of the largest health crises of our time. Trauma often lays the groundwork from which so many other mental health disorders grow. It has been consistently overlooked until recent years. "Trauma" doesn't have to mean the usual suspects - such as war, being in a life threatening situation, or enduring physical / sexual / emotional abuse. It can be any experience that was overwhelming, frightening, or deeply impactful that you have not been able to move on from. If you are experiencing negative effects from a painful past and feeling consistently triggered, therapy can help you heal.

Stress

Our world is advancing faster than our minds and bodies can keep up with. The proof is all around us. Despite having all these advances in our technology, it seems people are more stressed, tense, and unable to cope than ever before. Constant to-do lists, demanding jobs, packed after school schedules, and never having a moment to relax are indicators of high stress. Research is now showing us there is a price that we pay, not just mentally, but physically for high stress. Are you ready to restore balance back into your life?

common questions

The idea of coming to a stranger and divulging your inner thoughts and discussing painful emotions can be intimidating or even downright terrifying!

My goal is to make therapy a comfortable, judgement free place that allows you the space to heal. Therapy is about helping you work on the parts of yourself you want to change or to feel better. One of the most important factors of whether or not therapy will be beneficial is the relationship between the client and the therapist. If you don’t have a connection or feel that you can trust someone, how are you supposed to open up to them? The first couple of sessions – or as many as you need – are to allow you to get to know me and see if I would be a good fit for you.

The remainder of therapy is based around exploring thoughts, feelings, experiences, or relationships that have been a barrier for you to have peace, joy, or growth in your life. I work with clients to create a treatment plan – or “road map” – of what you want out of therapy, and then help each client develop a unique plan that suits them on how to get there.

Each session is 50 minutes.

Yes. I work with several different insurance providers. They are listed as follows:

  • Blue Cross/Blue Shield
  • United Health Care
  • UMR
  • Anthem

However, if you do not have insurance I also offer private pay options.  And there are, in fact, several benefits in choosing not to involve health care providers in therapy, including:

  • Not having a diagnosis attached to your permanent health record.
  • Having the freedom to choose the course and length of your treatment with your therapist instead of being guided by insurance expectations.
  • Avoiding having your protected records being released and reviewed by insurance companies in order to get coverage for your sessions.

Typically, it is recommended to begin attending therapy once per week. However, the most appropriate frequency is based on your unique needs and preferences.

Feel free to contact me via phone or email and we can work together to find days / times that work best for us to meet.

The benefits of investing in your mental health and wellbeing is immeasurable. Therapy is an investment in the future quality of your life and one of the best gifts you can give yourself.

All therapists are different. We each bring our own experiences, personalities, skills, and particular therapeutic styles to the table. This can make it overwhelming as a client to try and find the best fit.

The biggest indicator that I would be a good fit for you is if you are able to feel comfortable and trust me, even if it may take some time. Additional indicators would be whether the way I approach therapy makes sense to you or feels in line with the way you see the world. For example, some people are more logical and benefit from a therapist who can help them with straight forward, solution focused interventions. Others may be guided more by emotions and intuitions, and benefit more from exploring thoughts and feelings.

I practice using a holistic lense, which means I take into account all aspects of your life (physical, emotional, relational, spiritual, etc) during treatment and explore how all of these pieces connect to shape who you are – and how you can get better. As a trauma informed therapist, I assess and treat clients based on the understanding that any trauma experienced often lays the groundwork for their current emotional (and even physical) pain. I am passionate about helping clients understand the connection between the mind and the body. I believe that understanding and learning how to regulate the body is a big part of therapy – turns out that it’s not all in your head! Many of my techniques are a mix of educational and mindfulness based interventions.

The amount of sessions needed varies widely from person to person and depends on what you are wanting out of therapy.
While some people find only a few sessions to be helpful enough, therapy can take time and patience. I am guessing you didn’t start struggling with the issues or feelings bringing you in overnight, so allowing your mind and body the time it takes to heal is crucial.
